Doctor of the month: Dr. Robert Blum

One of our physicians, Dr. Robert Blum, has more than 30 years of experience as a neurosurgeon, and also in writing medical-legal evaluations. He has performed more than 1,000 surgeries. He has offices in Vallejo and Marin County and is currently doing medical-legal evaluations in our Oakland office.

Dr. Blum received his M.D. from the University of Rochester in New York and did his surgery residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, New York; his neurosurgery residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York and Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York. He also received his fellowship in neurology from The National Hospital, Queen Square London, England. Following his residencies, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Vietnam and later at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco.

He has been in private practice in Vallejo since 1971 and during his career has been chief of neurosurgery, Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Hayward; founder and director of two pain clinics: at Kentfield Medical Hospital and Vallejo General Hospital for over 10 years; chief of neurology and neurosurgery at Ross General Hospital and at Marin General Hospital.

Dr. Blum was appointed a Qualified Medical Evaluator in 1991.

He was a pioneer in percutaneous disc surgery and the first physician to perform this operation in the U.S. some 30 years ago.

His special interests are in spine surgery and chronic pain. Special areas of interest include indications for spine surgery, types of spine surgery, types of spinal fusion, the “failed back,” apportionment issues, indications for spinal simulators and morphine pumps for chronic back pain, and pain clinic.
